Medium dark brown heartwood but not as dark as black American walnut which it otherwise resembles. It is straight grained with a coarse but soft texture. Medium movement in service. It is an excellent carving wood yet possesses woodworking properties with its cousin American black walnut.? It is an excellent substitute, although a bit softer,? to black walnut. It can be stained and made to look like black walnut as the grain is very similar Specific Gravity .45? Butternut trees are affected by a fungal canker that can decimate entire stands of these beautiful trees. The canker has made this tree very hard to find in quality form and availability
